Beyond the What: Sleep thoughts — stopping the hamster wheel
My guest co-host Brian Fitzgibbons knows the struggle well: his sleep hygiene habits help him fall asleep, but a hamster wheel of thoughts makes it hard to get back to sleep after waking in the night.
Good sleep has three foundations: adequate quantity (most of us need 7.5–9 hours), good quality, and consistent timing to support our circadian rhythm. To interrupt those middle-of-the-night thoughts, we shared how audio options like Calm and Slumber Studios, which offer stories, music, and nature sounds, are interesting enough to break the loop but not so engaging that you can’t drift off. My current favorite is Sleepy History.
For a deeper dive, I highly recommend the work of Dr. Matt Walker.
Let’s Talk: Brian Fitzgibbons
Brian and I met in the pool about 15 years ago and currently swim with the Sonoma Splash Masters group. He’s turning 70 this year and shared how he is thoroughly enjoying retirement and fills his days with swimming, gardening, painting, and traveling.
Brian credits his healthy relationship with aging in part to the impact he made during his working years. He started as a special education teacher and then moved to the forefront of bringing adaptive communication technology to children and adults with special needs.
Giving my almost 8-year-old nonverbal daughter a communication system has been a genuine game-changer. She can express her wants and needs, and it’s given us a window into her personality, including a dry sense of humor and a refreshing confidence.

What’s Feeling Alive: Swimming Adventure
Brian's favorite way to see the world? Swimming through it. He's a devoted SwimTrek traveler, which are open-water swimming trips that combine stunning destinations with instant community. He's made friends from around the world through SwimTrek, and is heading to the Greek Islands this summer to celebrate turning 70. Happy birthday to Brian!
Thanks for being here,
Allison
