Welcome to Insight into Health, my radio show on listener-supported KSVY 91.3, where I explore ways to make healthy living realistic, enjoyable, and sustainable. I am your host, Allison McKeany, and these are the show notes for the live radio show that aired on March 2, 2026. This week, my husband, Lyle, joined me as my co-host.

Beyond the What: Nutrition and Metabolism
March is National Nutrition Month. Not the most popular thing to celebrate, I know1.
But what does nutrition even mean? What about nutrients? Nutritious?
The word nutrition comes from the Latin nutrire, meaning to nourish or sustain life.
A more descriptive definition is:
Nutrition is the science of how the nutrients we consume are digested, absorbed, and used to support metabolism — the processes that produce energy, build tissues, regulate & protect body function.
Three points that I’d like to highlight from the above definition:
Nutrition is science-based
Nutrients include:
Energy (calories or, more accurately, kilocalories)
Macronutrients (needed in large amounts)
Carbohydrates
Proteins
Fat
Micronutrients (needed in small amounts)
Vitamins
Minerals
Phytonutrients (potentially beneficial plant chemicals, e.g., flavonoids, isoflavones, carotenoids, etc.)
Metabolism is so much more than body weight; it is what keeps us alive. As written in Food Intelligence by Julia Belluz and Kevin Hall:
“Metabolism is core to the very existence of life.”
I know that nutrition and our bodies can be frustrating and confusing.
They are also awe-inspiring and amazing.
More on the intricacies of nutrition next week.
Let’s Talk: Tami Anderson
Tami and I met at the pool last year when she took one of the adult learn-to-swim classes I was teaching at Sonoma Splash. As Tami has progressed to joining my Master’s workouts, we have also become friends, and I was honored when she offered to join me on air as my first AMA (Ask Me Anything) guest!
Tami inquired about my general philosophy around health and nutrition, how I work with patients and clients to navigate busy lives while also taking care of our bodies and our health, and how food provides more than nutrients.
These questions allowed me to reflect on my approach to working with individuals every day, in a way that I hope makes people feel seen and met where they are at.
If you’d like to join me on air for my next AMA segment, please email me at insightinto health@gmail.com.
What’s Feeling Alive: Lyle on Golf and Mindfulness
Hey everyone, it’s Lyle here. Since the weather is warming up, and Spring is well on its way, I spoke about why I play golf in this segment. I do it for the exercise, those small moments of mindfulness as I focus on hitting each shot, and a bit of respite from our daily life, which includes caretaking our disabled daughter.
If you want to read more, last Summer I wrote about the role golf plays in my life these days for my friend’s golf publication here:
Thanks for being here,
Allison
