Welcome to Insight into Health, my radio show on listener-supported KSVY 91.3, where I explore ways to make healthy living realistic, enjoyable, and sustainable. I am your host, Allison McKeany, and these are the show notes for the live radio show that aired on January 12th, 2026.

Exciting update - I will now be joined by a co-host! My hope is that having more casual conversations about different aspects of health and wellness makes the information I share easier to understand and experiment with.

My husband, Lyle McKeany, joined me for this episode and will be on air with me for the next several weeks, talking all about talking!

Listen to the episode:

Beyond the What: Science & Art of Good Conversation

This segment was inspired by a book I read a few months ago, which had me marking pages, taking notes, and talking about it with anyone who would listen.

The book is called TALK: The Science of Conversation And The Art of Being Ourselves, by Alison Wood Brooks.

This book validates how complex and awkward good conversations can be, and provides evidence-based strategies to strengthen your conversations, which, in turn, can strengthen your connection with others.

“Conversation is an ongoing act of co-creation…a stream of microdecisions delicately coordinated between multiple human minds, as the context changes at every turn. We do it frequently, so it feels like we should be experts; in reality, we are amateur builders.” (pg xiv)

Lyle recommended that I share my favorite parts and takeaways on air, which inspired this and future episodes.

The book explores four main themes (cleverly using the acronym TALK):

T - Topics

A - Asking Questions

L - Levity

K - Kindness

On this episode, we dove into T for Topics. We’ll be exploring the other three in the coming weeks.

While preparing conversation topics ahead of time may seem unnatural or unnecessary, the author argues otherwise. Thinking about possible conversation topics can initiate good conversation, keep the conversation flowing, and promote connection and belonging.

Topic categories to consider include:

Interesting info — think of an interesting podcast you’ve listened to, a book you’ve read, or a fact that you’ve learned.
Callbacks — consider things you discussed at a previous conversation with this person: New job? Upcoming trip? Life challenge? Inquiring about these previously discussed topics can greatly increase connection by showing that you remember and care, and can act as stepping stones to deeper conversation.
Topic switching — the author’s research shows that changing topics more frequently than we typically do results in more engaging and fulfilling conversations. This is likely because it allows you to explore more subject areas than just the weather, but also because it helps avoid those awkward pauses in conversations when everyone has run out of something to say.

In experimenting with these myself, I have found that conversations do seem to be more lively, connecting, and fulfilling. Give them a try and let me know how it works for you!

Let’s Talk: Katie DeJongh

I was joined by the Program Manager at Vintage House in Sonoma, Katie DeJongh. Katie discussed the Vintage House’s mission to support the quality of life for Sonoma Valley residents as they age by fostering connection, exploration, and belonging through a variety of community-building classes and events.

I’ll be returning to Vintage House for an Insight Into Health event every Thursday at 2:30 pm starting this week to explore a variety of health and wellness topics through discussion, cooking demos, book groups (that don’t require reading the book), and open Q&A sessions. In January, we will explore longevity and “healthspan.”

What’s Feeling Alive?

Hi, it’s Lyle writing here now. We ran short on time for this newly named segment because the first two went over time. It’s always surprising how fast the time goes by when we’re in the studio! The segment is all about sharing what’s exciting us at the moment.

I started it off by sharing a musician I recently discovered, named Stephen Wilson Jr. I haven’t been much of a fan of country music historically. But his solo live performance of his original song, “I’m a Song,” absolutely blew me away. I was pleasantly surprised by his unique approach to guitar playing, his beat-up nylon-stringed guitar, his vocal delivery, his lyrics, and so much more. I’ve been down a rabbit hole learning more about him and his music ever since. Can you see why I couldn’t fit it all into the roughly seven minutes we had left?

I highly recommend taking less than five minutes out of your day to watch the video of him playing the song below. And then maybe another four minutes watching his stunning cover of “Stand By Me” from the same live performance afterwards.

Thanks for being here. Please remember to send your questions and topic inquiries to insightintohealth@gmail.com or leave a comment below.
