Welcome to Insight into Health, my radio show on listener-supported KSVY 91.3, where I explore ways to make healthy living realistic, enjoyable, and sustainable. I am your host, Allison McKeany, and these are the show notes for the live radio show that aired on February 2nd, 2026.

Once again, my husband, Lyle McKeany, joined me for this episode to wrap up our conversation about talking.

Be sure to check out my upcoming in-person events at the end of this post :)

Listen to the episode:

Beyond the What: Kindness in Conversation

This was our fourth and final discussion all about having good conversations, inspired by the book TALK: The Science of Conversation And The Art of Being Ourselves by Alison Wood Brooks.

The book explores four main themes, cleverly using the acronym TALK: Topics, Asking, Levity, Kindness.

So far, Lyle and I have explored topics, asking questions, and levity. This week, we wrapped up with kindness.

While I summed Topics as “providing fuel to feed the conversation,” Asking as “learning and engaging,” and Levity as “connection and moments of relief,” I had a more difficult time with the main point of Kindness.

Lyle suggested that Kindness is the “umbrella” underneath which Topics, Asking, and Levity fall. I agree.

Kindness isn’t about being nice or avoiding the hard stuff. It is the intention to both respectfully speak as well as listen:

Speaking with kindness communicates that you value the other person, even if you don’t agree. Positive, productive interactions are built on the mutual desire to see and understand each other.
Listening is trickier. As I’m sure you’ve heard before, “listening is more than waiting for your turn to speak.”
- Listening is also more than active listening — the ahhhs, and mmms, and headnods
- Responsive listening goes beyond active listening (which can, and is, easily faked) to show that you’ve heard through validation, questions (Asking!), callbacks (Topics!), and paraphrasing. If you’ve ever been in conversation with a responsive listener, it is magical.

If you were to ask me, before I read this book, what the most unkind thing someone could do during a conversation was, my answer would have been interrupting.

Interrupting is a pet peeve of mine. I’m sure it stems from a young adulthood of insecurity and receiving interruptions as invalidating or ignoring what I had to say.

Wood Brooks, however, provides more nuance to the whole business of interruptions:

On-topic interruptions can support good conversation. Things like, “oh, I loved that part of the movie, too!” and even completing others’ sentences.1
Off-topic interruptions, on the other hand, are most likely to result in disconnection and unsatisfying conversational experiences.

We would love to know what you thought about this on-air book club discussion. We both learned a lot about how to foster better conversations to strengthen connections.

Let’s Talk: Kyle Clausen, Brannan Center

We were joined by Kyle Clausen, Executive Director of Calistoga’s Brannan Center. The Brannan Center is a non-profit community hub, dedicated to bringing a variety of arts, education, and other local programs to Calistoga and surrounding communities. You can find my upcoming Insight into Health series, starting February 28, 2026, at the Brannan Center here.

Kyle shared that the project has been community-focused from the beginning, and the overarching goal is to answer the question, “What does the community need?”

What’s Feeling Alive:

The big news in our house over the weekend was that our youngest lost BOTH of her upper, front teeth. She takes after me as a late-tooth-loser. I didn’t lose my first tooth until after kindergarten, so I missed out on putting my name on the “I lost a tooth!” chart in my classroom. Kindly, the kindergarten teacher let me add my name to the list once it finally did happen!

Thanks for being here,

~Allison

I trust the author’s science here, though I’m sure she would agree that it needs to be context-dependent. Lyle has learned that I tend to shut down if he completes my sentences. I’m grateful that he’s patient with my irregular thinking-before-speaking cadence of conversation.
