Beyond the What: New Cholesterol Guidelines
In February of this year, I offered a speaking series titled “Matters of the Heart.” Over three classes, I reviewed what “heart health” is and why we should all care (heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for both men and women in the US).
I then shared the many risk factors we can monitor, including blood pressure and various blood tests. I wrote all about it here.
Among the blood tests I recommended everyone talk to their doctor about is a type of cholesterol, “Lp(a)” (pronounced “L, P, little a”).
Lp(a) is a genetically-determined type of LDL with an extra protein attached that is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
This type of cholesterol can’t be changed via diet or lifestyle, and there aren’t currently any medications that can reduce it, though several are in clinical trials. Yet, being aware of elevated Lp(a) levels is an under-appreciated factor in heart disease risk.
Thankfully, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association recently released updated cholesterol guidelines, which specifically recommend testing Lp(a) at least once1. You can listen to a summary on the JAMA podcast here.
Thank you to my co-host for the evening, Dave Haffner, for introducing me to familyheart.org, which offers resources and testing for Lp(a).
Let’s Talk: Rachel Glitz, Executive Director of Cancer Support Sonoma
Rachel joined us to talk more about Cancer Support Sonoma’s Integrative Wellness event on May 9th, featuring Integrative Oncologist, Dr. Donald Abrams, along with several multi-modality wellness practitioners. I’m excited to be offering a cooking demo and nutrition discussion at the event, as well.
While the event is full, Rachel encouraged anyone interested in attending to reach out to info@cancersupportsonoma.com or call 707-509-3549 to be added to the waitlist.

Ok, so I just read this book… The Power of Meaning
Dave and I talked about my big takeaways from a book I recently finished — The Power of Meaning by Emily Esfahani-Smith.
We talked about the importance of belonging, versus “fitting in,” and seeking out high-quality relationships that welcome all your “prickly bits.”
We also talked about purpose, which involves identifying your gifts and strengths — however big or small — and using them to help others.
What are your gifts to share?
Thanks for being here,
~Allison

Life Lesson: I learned years ago that you can't depend on one person to MAKE you happy. That's a job for you--easy at times & hard at others. I believe it comes from within with help from outside experiences including: random kindness (given by you to others or received by you)silliness, &/or moments of wonder and joy.
